Self-esteem Building in Toddlers

I liked this hand-out I received at the pediatrician's office after Hank's 2 year check-up and I thought I'd share it. I know I can always use these reminders.

'Self-esteem Building in Toddlers' (www.bbc.co.uk, Eileen Hayes)

1. Show Love - Tell your toddler, as often as possible, that you love him.
2. Chat - Talking together gives the message that you enjoy your child's company.
3. Listen - Show your child they are worth listening to.
4. Play - Join in your toddler's games, to show your child you enjoy spending time with him.
5. Praise - Not just for success, but for efforts.
6. Encourage - Allow your toddler to independently complete self-care tasks, be ready to step in only if needed.
7. Provide choices - Help your toddler to feel he can exert control over the world by providing 2 acceptable options.
8. Emphasize good points - Concentrate on the positives and ignore annoying behavior as much as possible.
9. Encourage friendships - being able to make friends plays a big role in self-esteem.
10. Celebrate family life - Help your child know he has a special place within your family.

Good advice! I'm thinking about copying it and giving it to my parents at back to school night.

I like that too...I want to make sure Blake has a good self esteem now so that he'll make good choices in the future...
